Hi friends,
It’s been a busy past couple of weeks getting back into the swing of work and routine (and still enjoying summer for as long as it lasts) after the festive season - so I don’t have a particularly hefty Cold Brew for you today. But I thought I’d share what I’ve been reading/consuming/appreciating lately
A truly stellar gem of a short story, ‘Long Distance,’ in the New Yorker this week. (And a thoughtful, cogent interview with its author, Ayşegül Savaş.)
Succession Season 3 but Logan tries to order Domino’s. Someone give this man an Emmy, please. I snorted out my coffee laughing at this.
Went to see House of Gucci, which was campy and a bit absurd but in a fun way. I definitely didn’t think it was Oscar bait like so many people are saying (the accents are ridiculous, for one thing), but I enjoyed it as entertainment. (It was also a treat to sit in a dark, air-conditioned cinema for three hours on a scorching 40 degree day, so on second thought that may be why I took to the film so kindly?) Anyway, this tweet sums it up:
A wonderful story (and photographs) by Alicia Vera in WePresent about young female basketball players in Oaxaca, Mexico.
Twee Began as an Unabashedly Radical Subculture: In classic Jacobin fashion, a long and fascinating deep dive into the radical (punk, feminist, anti-Thatcherite) origins of something I’ve frankly never thought twice about.
Thanks go to Marit for sending me this one: Bookcore: How Everyone Is Dressing Like a Bookstore Regular. Scroll to the end for lols. Biiiiig Upper West Side/Upper NW DC energy… iykyk.
From awhile back, but an excellent essay by Yaa Gyasi in the Guardian: White people, black authors are not your medicine.
Offline, I am currently reading the Booker long-listed An Island by Karen Jennings, which is so far excellent.
That’s all I’ve got for today! More substantial stuff next time, promise. And in the meantime, if you want more words from me, consider subscribing to the weekly editorial I write for Where The Leaves Fall, a London-based magazine exploring humankind’s connection with nature. Linking this week’s dispatch right here.
Til next time,
Maddy
